Welcome!
Archery is the skill and practice of shooting arrows with the use of a bow. Archery has historically been used for combat and hunting. In approx. 2800 BC, the first composite bow was produced by the Egyptians. It was made from wood, tipped with animal horn and held together with animal sinew and glue. Today, its main use is a recreational activity. An archer or bowman is a person who practices archery. There are many different types of bows and arrows that can be used and is based on personal preference whether one is practicing, hunting or just as an activity. Men and women also typically use gender specified bows. The bows and arrows come in many different sizes, colors, and designs. Some bows are still made out of wood and vary in weight.
The act of shooting an arrow consists of placing an arrow on a string that is connected to a bow, pulling the string back and letting go to propel the arrow forward. It's very important to be extremely careful when practicing archery because the sharp arrows can hurt or kill animals and humans.
Archery is more than just hunting animals. There are many competitions, tournaments, and 3D simulations at archery training centers that can be fun for anyone. Some prefer this sport just for hunting and some enjoy all aspects.
When participating in archery competitions or tournaments each shot will be counted as a score. On a typical target there are five colored circles used and each represent a different score:
color | score |
---|---|
yellow | 9 |
red | 7 |
blue | 5 |
black | 3 |
white | 1 |
Arrows are shot and scored in either sets of three or six.
