History

Freighthouse Dining Room

The Freighthouse had a long history before becoming a restaurant in October, 1978. The building itself was constructed in 1880 after a merging of railway lines in the 1870s between the Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroads. More space was needed, and the Freight House would become one of the largest in the state, containing the freight offices of the Milwaukee Railroad and handling all incoming freight. After freight services were halted in 1955, the building passed through different hands, used privately by businesses until April 1978. Due to its existence as one of the few remaining 19th Century railroad depots, renovation was begun to preserve its rich history. After renovation, it opened as the Freighthouse Restaurant and Tavern.

Features

the Freighthouse Bar

The Freighthouse offers a cozy, almost historic-feeling atmosphere accommodating all varieties of occasions. This restaurant is regarded for its extensive menu of fine wines at reasonable prices with a knowledgeable staff to help guests make the perfect selection. Guests are able to participate in a “wine flight,” offering three samples of varietals before selecting a glass of wine to pair with dinner. The restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere combined with its huge fireplace and wood paneling create the perfect atmosphere. The entire back wall is home to the restaurant’s enormous bar. In addition to its extensive wine list, the bar is stocked with hundreds of liquors. The Freighthouse also plays host to musicians and bands on Friday and Saturday nights.

Food

the Freighthouse Salad Bar

The Freighthouse’s menu is varied enough that every diner will find something to enjoy. In addition to their famous slow-roasted Prime Rib, their naturally aged Prime Beef is charbroiled to order. They have Asian-inspired cuisine including chicken and steak teriyaki and a wide variety of fresh seafood options. They are also conscious of vegetarians, offering seasonal vegetables, and all meals include a trip through the salad bar.
