Working with Resolution
There are many different types of printers out there. Using differ line screen and being used for many different application; Magazines, newspaper, billboards, tee-shirts. So knowing what ppi to set your document at can be a difficult task. But if you know what you are planning to print on; there are common line screens used.
Remember the ratio of PPI to Line screen is 2 ppi: 1 lines screen
Types of printing
Low resolution – 72 ppi
Banners – normally don't need a high resolution because they are viewed from a distance.
Here is an equation to help figure a banner rez.
- Standard resolution: 300 / viewing distance in feet = ppi
- High rez: 600 / viewing distance in feet = ppi
Medium resolution – 150 ppi
Newspapers – normally use a line screen of 85 lpi. The pixels per inch for newspapers can very between 130ppi & 170 ppi
High resolution – 300 ppi
Magazine – 150 line screen print is becoming a standard for magazines.
Art house books – many are using a 200 line screen print.
