Project of the Week

Bulb Light

Supplies:

  • Old Light Bulbs
  • Fabric Scraps
  • All Purpose Glue
  • Glass Paint
  • Wire
  • String or Fishing Wire
  • Thimbles or soda bottle tops
Project supplies
  1. Hollow out the light bulb (tutorial here )
  2. If you picked fabric to decorate your hot air ballon cut them into petal-shaped pieces (to get the right size for your lightbulb measure from the center of the top of the lightbulb to the top of the metal base.) Then use the all purpose glue and glue them to the light bulb.
  3. If you picked painting use the glass paint and draw a decoration on the light bulb.
  4. While the paint or glue is drying take your thimble or bottle cap and poke some holes into it
  5. Paint thimble or bottle cap if desired
  6. Cut pieces of string (Length of the bulb from top to bottom x2)
  7. Tie a loop in one of the pieces of string.
  8. Hold loop in place at the top of the bulb. Brush non-diluted glue on the string, taking care to line-up either side with the seams of the fabrics.
  9. Tie the second piece of string around the top knot.
  10. Brush glue on the remaining strings, all the way down to the line where the bulb meets the metal base.
  11. Dry upside-down. While the glue is drying, paint the metal base of the bulb with a complimentary acrylic color. Dry.
  12. Using your forefinger and thumb, rub some glue on each piece of dangling string. Twist ends slightly to make them easier to pass through the holes in the cap "basket". Let dry for a few minutes.
  13. Thread the stiffened string through one of the holes in the cap "basket". Tie a knot in the end. Repeat with the string on the opposite side, taking care to tie the strings evenly so the basket will be level. Repeat with remaining strings. Trim excess string off of each knot.
  14. Optional: Glue a small plastic or polymer animal inside the basket.
  15. Then hang the ballon with fishing wire and enjoy!
