Choosing a Sketchbook

If you’ve browsed sketchbooks before, you may see that they usually have a weight (ie. 70 lb) on them. Weights refer to the thickness of the paper. Here’s a quick guide to knowing what’s what:
- 25 lb: tracing paper
- 30-35 lb: newsprint
- 50-60 lb: tracing paper (best for pencils, charcoal, and pastel - perhaps a little too thin for ink or markers)
- 70-80 lb: drawing paper suitable for most media
- 90-100 lb: heavy-weight drawing paper (similar to cardstock or light poster board)
- Heavy papers up to 140 lb: very thick and often textured - normally used for painting rather than drawing
I would recommend choosing a weight from 70-100 lb, or whichever feels right to you.
