Main Hall, La Crosse State Normal School

Story

The Main Hall was built in Renaissance Revival architectural style. The architect was Van Ryn and De Gelleke. It was built in 1908-1909 at a cost of $260,000. It was the first building of the La Crosse State Normal School. Eventually becoming part of University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. It is currently used as offices. The Main Hall has also been known as Main Hall and Graff Main Hall.

Historic Significance

The Main Hall is significant because of its continuing role as the central focus of higher education and bold architectural styling. It became a National Historical Place in March 1985. The exterior of the building is largely intact, the only remaining features of the interior are wood and iron staircases located at the main, east and west entrances and decorative plaster frieze at the main entrance.
