Writing a Character

One of the most important, if not the most important, things in any story is the character. A good story cannot survive without a good character but a good character can survive with a bad story. Characters are the reasons why stories are relatable and realistic.

Relatable

The characters who we follow, or want to follow are those who we can relate too; those who we understand. By having this connection with them we are able to generate feelings towards him or her; with a high possible chance that we'll be able to put ourselves in their shoes. To write a relatable character, you have to use real world observation of people. Observing how one person’s reaction is the total opposite of another, yet it still similar; connected. By understanding the world around us, we can write a world that is understandable.

Growth

Any character we follow, we want them to grow as we grow with them. Any experience that we and the character went through together should impact both us and the character to growth and relatability. We love watching a character grows and change whether be it for the good or bad. A character should always be going somewhere, be it physically or mentally.

Purpose

For a character to grow and go somewhere, he/she have to have a purpose. There have to be a motivation for everything he/she do. With no purpose there’s no understanding, which means he/she is un-relatable. In every story he/she needs one main purpose; a reason why we’re reading through their eyes instead of some other characters.
