History
Quilting was common in the late 18th Centruy and early years of the 19th Centruy.Commercial blankets or wovencoverlets were a more economical for blankets for most people so quilting was more of a leisure activity for the wealthy. Most women kept busy with spinning, weaving and sewing in order to keep the family clothed.
Changes in technology effected the number and styles of quilts in the middle years of the 19th centruy. Fabrics were more affordable and easier to get for more families. As a result quilt making became more widespread.
