Types of Quilts
Traditional pieced quilts are what you are most likely to find. Traditional pieced quilts have a long history. There are many popular patterns out there such as the log cabin, nine-patch, drunkard's path, and Irish chain. Each pattern has many variations that you can create. Crazy quilts are another fun quilt you can make. It is fun because you can use any fabric and stitching and make an amazing quilt.
Another type of quilt you can find is the applique quilt. This is when you sew the pieces on the quilt itself instead of in the piecing. One example of this is the Sun Bonnet Sue and Hawaiian quilts. Most appliques are hand stitched on. There are now some fusible stabilizers that are easy to use and make appliques so much easier. You just iron the pieces down and then sew.
Another quilting type would be the whole cloth quilt. This is a quilt that is made of one large piece of fabric with a design drawn on it. It is then layered and the design quilted. In the past, the whole cloth quilt was a show of how rich you were because you could afford to purchase the whole piece of fabric. These quilts tend to be done with white or off-white threads. As a new variation of this type of quilting the top fabric is now bright and friendly colors instead of the white traditionally used.
