Kinds of Quilts

One type of quilting is called hand quilting. This is when all the sewing is done by hand using the running stitch. Some people like to use a quilting frame or hoop to make sure there are no gaps in the fabric while they are quilting.

Another type would be machine quilting. This is when you use a sewing machine to put the layers together. You would use large safety pins to tack the layers together so that the fabric doesn't pucker as it goes through the sewing machine and all the stitches are even. There is also a special longarm machine that can be used. You put the quilt in a special frame and use a special long arm on the machine to sew the quilting design on.

There is also tying. This is a technique of fastening the three layers together by using yarns or multiple strands of thread. Square knots are used to finish off the ties so that the quilt can be used and washed without the knots coming undone.
